Open call EXTENDED: Other Edges of the World
Within the framework of an international project supported by the Creative Europe program, we are looking for artists based in Spain who are willing to work in the international context and are interested in working with the topic of center/periphery dichotomy with a new and challenging approach.
About the project
Project Other Edges of the World deals with the decolonization of power structures behind the center/periphery dichotomy. We propose to take a closer look at terms such as “local” and “central” and find out their meaning in the post-pandemic European conditions. Enhancing a network of independent NGOs operating in the field of contemporary art, the project is going to provide a platform for in-depth artistic research. Artists are going to develop in-progress works proposing new metaphors helpful in describing what kind of future can we imagine in these turbulent and cruel times. The artistic endeavor is going to be based on the notion of locality, peripheries, and the better and less-known parts of Europe. Our scope is to find a way to build a dialogue that is going to elevate what stays out of the center and help us reconstruct the center itself.
The Other Edges of the World project delineates the way for a journey from the so-called peripheries toward the so-called centers, starting from the stereotypical understanding of what is rural, forgotten, and underrepresented and deconstructing the destination point of this trip. It is our task to articulate a world that is going to be open toward climate challenges and ready to fight imperialistic, nationalistic, and anti-democratic tendencies.
About KAIR
Košice Artist in Residence is an international residency program for artists from all over the world and all artistic disciplines and expressions. KAIR strongly focuses on creating international cooperation between Slovak and foreign artists and art organizations. Since 2011, artists have had the chance to work in the inspiring environment of Košice’s singular cultural surroundings, realize art projects, collaborate with the agile local art scene, and present themselves to the local and national public. In recent years the residency program has focused on connecting individuals and sharing the responsibility to the world during a common global crisis (environmental, political, economic, social, etc.). The program aims not only to analyze the current situation but to look critically at its consequences and the near and distant future. KAIR also provides opportunities for Slovak artists to travel for residencies in cooperation with its partners. The residency program offers two separate studios approx. 20 m2 in size, suitable for visual artists, and they are connected to the Šopa Gallery, where the residency activities in Košice will take place.
