Radek Brousil (CZ)

Radek Brousil is a professional photographer who earned his degree from different art academies in Prague and abroad. He is familiar with several photographic genre from the studio based object photography to the landscape pictures. But what is in the main focus of his photographer activity is the self-reflective analysis of the photographical process itself, the principles of the photographic representation and the techno-cultural context in which the whole photo-industry and the individual practices developed over the last decades. He is using a very sophisticated, clear and reduced visual language in his compositions connected this minimalist approach with a coherent artistic endeavor to reach technical perfection both in the shooting and the physical realization of the image no matter it’s a simple print or more complex object. Radek Brousil, as a winner of Oskár Čepan Award for visual artist, will spend two months (October – November 2016) at residency at Youkobo Art Space in Tokyo. During the residency he will build on his work called The Ultimate Norm: „In my new series The Ultimate Norm I am investigating a seemingly technical but in fact very political and universal issue about the improvement of color-photo technology: the white-skin bias nature of the technical apparatus which was developed by white-male engineers. The photo’s color balance is determined by the concentrations of different chemicals in the film, so the tone calibration of the films for the analogue photo-technology even in the 80’s was determined in favor to capture European type white skin tones and was not sensitive enough to visualize black skinned persons. The technical drawback remained unsolved even after the spread of digital technology, and only the strong demand from the industrial companies to advertise properly their different tone varied products, like chocolate and wood, forced the photo-industry to improve their research. I am trying to reflect this invisible technological racism and the visible appearance of this phenomenon of unequal treatment of human beings.“ Radek Brousil

Radek Brousil je profesionálny fotograf, ktorý študoval na viacerých vysokých umeleckých školách v Prahe i v zahraničí. S istotou sa pohybuje v mnohých fotografických žánroch, od štúdiových zátiší až po snímky krajiny. Ťažiskom jeho fotografickej tvorby je však sebareflektívna analýza samotného fotografického procesu, princípov fotografického zobrazovania a technologicko-kultúrneho kontextu, na pozadí ktorého sa v posledných dekádach odvíja fotografický priemysel, ale aj individuálna fotografická činnosť. Vo svojich kompozíciách používa veľmi sofistikovaný, čistý a redukovaný vizuálny jazyk. Tento minimalistický prístup sa spája s koherentnou umeleckou snahou dosiahnuť technickú dokonalosť v samotnom fotografovaní I vo fyzickej realizácii obrazu, bez ohľadu na to, či ide o jednoduchú tlač alebo zložitejší objekt. Radek Brousil, ako víťaz Ceny Oskára Čepana strávi dva mesiace (október-november) na rezidenčnom pobyte v Youkobo Art Space v Tokiu. Počas rezidencie plánuje nadviazať na svoju prácu s názvom The Ultimate Form: „ V mojej novej sérii The Ultimate Form skúmam zdanlivo technický ale v skutočnosti veľmi politický a všeobecný problém rozvoja technológie farebnej fotografie: sklon k preferencii bielej pokožky pri technických zariadeniach ktorý bol vyvinutý belošskými inžiniermi. Vyváženie farieb fotografií je určené koncentráciou rôznych chemikálií vo filme, takže nastavenie odtieňov pre analógovú fotografiu už v osemdesiatych rokoch bolo určené v prospech bielych odtieňov pokožky európskeho typu a nebolo dosť citlivé na vizualizáciu ľudí s tmavou pleťou. Tento technický nedostatok ostal nevyriešený dokonca aj po rozšírení digitálnej technológie, a len silný dopyt priemyselných spoločností vhodne propagovať ich produkty rozdielnych odtieňov, ako čokoláda a drevo, donútila fotografický priemysel zdokonaliť ich výskum. Snažím sa reflektovať tento neviditeľný technologický rasizmus a viditeľnú podobu tohto fenoménu nerovného zaobchádzania ľudských bytostí.“ Radek Brousil
