Tilmann Meyer-Faje(NL)&Viktor Feher(SK) – Prefabricated City

Prefabricated City je výstavou košického autora Viktora Fehera a nemecko – holandského sochára Tilmanna Meyer-Faje, ktorý strávil v Košiciach dva mesiace v rámci projektu K.A.I.R. Košice Artist in Residence.

Graffiti pre Viktora Fehera symbolizuje živý organizmus v sídliskovom prostredí a zároveň akýsi nežiaduci účinok, ktorý vzniká vďaka vplyvu tohto prostredia. Maľba na stenách galérie bola vytvorená počas happeningu v decembri minulého roku, kedy Viktor vyzval niekoľko jedincov k tomu, aby sa na chvíľu v galérii zachovali ako na ulici. Táto správa sa do celej komunity rozniesla veľmi rýchlo a v nasledujúcich dňoch prichádzali ľudia, ktorí sa chceli zúčastniť. Viktorovi sa takto podarilo v jednej miestnosti skoncentrovať celú súčasnú graffitti subkultúru (neoficiálnu, neinštitucionalizovanú a neorganizovanú skupinu reagujúcu na mestský anonymný životný štýl, žijúcu v Košiciach a okolí). Viktorovou snahou však nebolo iba vytvoriť prezentáciu jednotlivých writerov, ale priniesť do galérie niečo, čo bude symbolizovať reálny, živý sídliskový produkt a to, čo z neho prirodzene vzniklo.

Tilmann Meyer-Faje pri tvorbe svojich sôch a priestorových inštalácií testuje správanie a hranice materiálu, ktorým je väčšinou hlina alebo drevo. Vo svojej práci sa sústreďuje na mestské plánovanie a na zlyhávanie industriálnych procesov. Svojimi keramickými sochami kopíruje súčasné konštrukcie našej vysoko rozvinutej spoločnosti v očakávaní jej rozpadu. Jeho sochy sú často krehké, postavené rýchlo, pričom už samotný proces tvorby spôsobuje ich deštrukciu. Jednou z ústredných tém, s ktorými Tilmann pracuje je sovietská architektúra. V Košiciach počas rezidenčného pobytu vytvoril z hliny mesto s názvom ´Prefabricated city´.

Kombináciou týchto dvoch diel vzniká v galérii špecifická inštalácia. Tilmannove rozpadávajúce sa paneláky môžu predpovedať budúcnosť našich sídlisk avšak stále aj pri ich rozpadávajúcej sa konštrukcii pôsobia veľmi čisto, akoby bez ľudského zásahu. Kontrastom voči tomu je graffiti, umenie typické pre panelákové sídliská. V expozícii sú svetlá namierené práve na Tilmannove paneláky, ktoré sú symbolom toho, z čoho obaja autori vychádzajú. Na druhej strane, pomaľované steny galérie ostávajú tmavé, neosvetlené. Postava writera je takto typicky ukrytá v tieni. Je to človek, ktorý zasahuje do diania v meste, fyzicky sa ukrýva v anonymnej mase ľudí, sledujúc svoje meno na stene. Tmavé steny zároveň symbolizujú noc, ulicu a jej tmavé zákutia, činnosť, ktorá väčšinou prebieha v noci.

Rezidenčný pobyt Tilmanna Meyer-Faje sa uskutočnil v rámci spolupráce projektu K.A.I.R. Košice Artist in Rezidence s organizáciou Motel Spatie v holandskom meste Arnhem. Výstava vznikla s podporou MK SR a Nadácie Tatrabanky.

Prefabricated City is an exhibition of Košice-based author Viktor Feher and german/dutch sculptor Tilmann Meyer-Faje, who spent two months in Košice within project K.A.I.R. Košice Artist in Residence.

Graffiti for Viktor Feher symbolises both a living organism in the suburbs environment and an undesirable effect, which has been created thanks to the influence of this environment. Painting on the walls of gallery was created during happening in December last year, when Viktor encouraged couple of people to behave in the gallery as there were in the street. This message had spread very quickly and in the following days many people, who wanted to participate, came. Thus, Viktor managed to collect the whole current graffiti subculture (unofficial, non-institutionalised and disorganised group reacting on the city anonymous lifestyle in Košice and surroundings). Viktor’s desire wasn’t only to create presentation of individual writers, but also to bring to the gallery something that symbolises real, living suburb product and what has naturally come out of that.

While creating his statues and site-specific installations, Tilmann Meyer-Faje usually tests the behaviour and limits of material, which are predominantly clay or wood. In his work, he focuses on city planning and failure of the industrial processes. His ceramic statues copy current contructions of highly developed society in the expectation of its destruction. His statues are often fragile, built quite quickly, therefore already  the process of its creation causes some destruction. One of the major topics Tilmann works with is the one of soviet architecture. During his residency stay in Košice he created a clay city called Prefabricated city.

Combining these two artworks a specific installation has been created. Tilmann’s towerblocks which are falling apart could predict a future, but despite their decaying character they seem to be very pure, as if with no human touch. Contrast to it is a graffiti – art typical for towerblock settlements. In the exhibition, all the lights are spotted on Tilmann’s contructions, which are symbols of what both authors come from. The walls of gallery, on the other hand, remain dark, unlighted. Person of writer is hidden in the shadow. It’s a man who interferes into the happening in the city, but physically hides himself in the anonymous crowd of people, keeping an eye on his name on the wall. Moreover, dark walls represent night, street and its dark corners, and acitivity that usually happens during night,

Residential stay of Tilmann Meyer-Faje took place thanks to cooperation of project K.A.I.R. Košice Artist in Residence with organisation Motel Spatie in dutch city Arnhem. Exhibition has been created with the support of Ministry of Culture SR and Tatrabanka Foundation.
